Pyramid Thunderhead IPA

Pyramid Thunderhead IPA

Thunderhead IPA from Pyramid Brewing. A traditional India Pale Ale with an ABV of 6.7%

Pyramid Thunderhead IPAThe beer pours into a pint glass with a nice light yellow color but certainly cloudy as well. The head is slow to fall and lacing is present. The aroma is very forward, standard to the style. The hops give it a nice floral note without being overbearing. And my cat Kody seemed to like the aroma as well.

The mouthfeel is light and dry, almost smooth for an IPA

The taste is hard to describe. It is definately a well hopped IPA but it really lacks the bitterness of really good IPAs. It is tart and fruity but not terribly lingering. Personally, I find it more satisifying than most IPAs in that regard. It had enough flavor to speak to me despite being in the 5th position of a night of varied beers. Would recommend it.

Nice IPA. Smooth and not too agressively hopped. I’d drink one or two any night – at most. It rates higher than most IPAs for me as I usually find the style a bit overbearing after one. The final grade…

Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss

Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss

Leinenkugels Honey WeissLeinenkugel’s Honey Weiss from the from the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company is an American Pale Wheat Ale with an ABV of 4.9%

Poured into a pint glass, the color is a pale yellow with a white head. The head pours tall at a decent 1″ and falls slow enough to be respectable. No lacing. The aroma is that of a standard macro on a hot day at the ballpark watching the Buccos. The glass continues to stream bubbles well after pouring, 20 minutes plus.

The mouthfeel is quite carbonated which is a saving gracve for this otherwise disappointing beer. Its a shame since it followed the night’s highlight, the Leinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat.

Taste is average, and not at all sweet for being brewed with “Real Wisconsin Honey.” I haven’t had an opportunity to drink any beers made with “Fake” Wisconsin Honey – and I doubt I could tell the difference.

Unimpressive. This would go down easy on a hot day after mowing the lawn but otherwise – avoidable. Crap! I missed the first 40 minutes of WWE’s RAW. The final grade…

Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat

Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat

Leinenkugel Sunset WheatLeinenkugel’s Sunset Wheat is from the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company. This is the first of two Leinenkugles on the menu tonight. This is the beer followed the Shock Top, which is also a fruit & coriander infused summer wheat beer. Witbeir if you will.

This beer is everything the Shock Top is not. Poured into a chilled mug so I can’t really comment on the color much. The white head is frothy and leaves after a respectable moment. The aroma is pleasant with lemon notes. Mouthfeel is refreshing, dry but not over staying its welcome.

The taste is light, refreshing. Dry and crisp. Citrus is present and doesn’t linger. The spice is still missing for me, but overall – a nice drinkable beer. I’ll be suggesting this when I see it on a beer menu. At only 4.9% ABV, I could drink a lot of these only any given night.

I need to get a bottle of this into Nicole’s hands. I would be curious to hear her impressions. The Leinenkugel’s website suggests adding a slice of orange, which I did not. I’m not sure I’d need it. I enjoyed it that much. On the negative side, after I finished the beer – my throat was coated in a way that made me want another. That might not be a good thing.

A case of this beer would make a great house-warming gift. This is good. As close to very good as you can get. It lacks the depth to grade it higher but the Final Grade is…

Shock Top Belgian White

Shock Top Belgian White

Shock TopShock Top Belgian White from Anheuser-Busch. The label describes it as “Brewed with Orange, Lemon, and Lime peels and Corriander.” ABV is 5.2%

Poured into a pint glass, showing a very light orange color. The head finished sizable, almost 3/4″ which dropped faster than a porn star’s panties on set. seriously, i picked up the bottle to snap a pic of the label, and by the time I set the bottle down – the head was gone. elapsed time… 7 seconds tops. No head remains and the lacing is minimal.

The smell is somewhat faint but not especially unpleasant. I’m missing the spices but they *might* be there… hard to tell. The smell did remain throughout the glass and did manage to add to the overall experience. Improved the flavor enough to allow me to finish the beer.

The taste is not offensive. Smooth and citrusy but unremarkable. Not exactly knocking you over with great taste here but certainly not bad. The mouth feel is fine… like a bad macro brew’s sophisticated older cousin from West Virginia. Sure… its better than its relatives, but its still a hillbilly. Aftertaste is not good. Drying my mouth in an unwelcome way.

Whew. Dodged a bullet here. This past Saturday, I was in a distributorship looking for a nice summer wheat beer for my wife. We were initially struck be the the playful branding. the orange and the mohawk were fun. after looking up the beer on beeradvocate.com with my Treo… we passed. The ancestry was enough to give me pause on purchasing an entire case. Good thing. I’ll pass on this one in the future. The final grade…

Great Lakes Moondog ESB

Great Lakes Moondog ESB

Great Lakes ESBGreat Lakes Moondog ESB proves that Cleveland can have at least one thing to be proud of… cause the Browns sure ain’t it. ABV is 5.0%. Their website, www.greatlakesbrewing.com details how this dog is named after the 1952 Moondog Coronation Ball held at the Cleveland Arena, what many consider the first “rock and roll” concert. This beer won a Gold Medal at the World Beer Championships three years running from 1994 to 1996. I can see why

Poured into an unchilled pint glass, the color was very pleasant. Best described as a pale golden yellow, it was bright enough under the light to be quite appealing. The head was fresh smelling, but dropped very quickly – leaving a nice soft head and medium lacing. The lacing remained throughout the entire glass.

The smell is quite bready, lots of yeast. The mouthfeel is smooth and somewhat bubbly.

The taste is quite surprising. I’ve never had an ESB before and I was fearful. Overly bitter, heavily hopped beers don’t really appeal to me – despite trying them time and time again. I was intimidated by the name i suppose. Very little aftertaste to ruin the experience.

I would order this beer at a pub throughout the night. May make for a great session beer. Curious to try it on tap somewhere. If I see it on draft, I will be trying it for sure.

Yeah, I would definitely drink this again. I was afraid of the E.S.B style. Not being a fan of heavily hopped beers, I was not very optimistic. Glad to be proven wrong. I enjoyed this beer. I’ve read that this ESB may not be the best representative of the style but its enough to get me to try another. The final grade…
