Magic Hat’s Jinx Ale comes in at a respectable 6.90% ABV. The label only describes the beer as “An ale inspired by the doctrines of medieval chemists.” Um, ok… This beer was a gift from a co-worker. One bottle – poured into a pint glass. The beeradvocate lists this as a Scotch Ale/ Wee Heavy.

Magic Hat JinxThe creamy off-white head drops soon enough but leaves a thick lace that clings to the glass. The head sticks around long into the beer. Below that is a medium coppery brown that holds tones of red.

The smell is mostly malts, but not overly so… almost light. There but not there. Bready with a hint of raisins maybe. The beer is surprisingly smooth for a higher alcohol content ale. It seems dry in a way that makes my mouth water. The aroma seems to almost rebound inside my mouth and re-introduce itself in my nose – while my mouth is closed. To be honest – I can’t stop smelling this beer. Great nose.

Pleasant caramel and coffee, and again raisins. Obvious malted roasted flavor, roasted raisins if that’s possible, with a bitter and very earthy aftertaste. Smokey even.

Wow, i have to admit – this beer lived up to all the hype. I read some reviews that made this beer sound like the second coming of beer-niravna! while i don’t know about all that… its still better than most of what I’ve had in the last few months. Gotta give it a…
